Year 3 Venture Underground!

Year 3 have been out and about again, this time visiting Matlock Bath Mining Museum as part of their topic Marvellous Matlock!

They took a tour of the museum and had the opportunity to pan for fools gold and take a trip down the mine looking for lead just like they would have done in the past. Venturing into Temple Mine gave the children an insight into the underground workings that used to exist all over the peak district.

Galena, lead ore, has been mined in the Peak District since before Roman times. Until the 20th century many families in the area earned a basic living from this mineral. The children discovered more about this industry and how it shaped the landscape, at the Peak District Lead Mining Museum and experience underground conditions at the authentic 1920s Temple Mine. Take a look at our gallery. For more information about Matlock Bath Lead Mining Museum or to plan a visit click here.
